Churchill Downs racetrack once again hosted a most celebrated Louisville, Kentucky event this past weekend, the 143rd Kentucky Derby. Always Dreaming, the 3-year-old thoroughbred took the victory with jockey John R Velazquez. Trainer Todd Pletcher said, “I think he really came in here and knew it was game time, and he was ready to go.”

The muddy terrain and threatening rain did not completely hold the fancy hat-adorning crowds back, with attendance marked at 158,070 according to NBC. The record for attendance was set in 2015, with 170,513. Despite smaller numbers, the betting jumped significantly, with an estimated $209.2 million coming in, rising 9 percent from 2016.
Congratulations! Solid Kentucky Derby win to Always Dreaming, jockey John R. Velazquez, trainer Todd A. Pletcher! #kentuckyderby#louisville
