What Is an Underride Accident?
The rear carriage of a truck is generally much higher than the average passenger vehicle. When a truck stops suddenly, a passenger vehicle behind it may not have time to veer out of the way and will be forced into a rear collision. Because of the height discrepancy, the car can pass under the rear of the truck’s undercarriage. Underride accidents also can and do happen on the sides and front of tractor trailers where no guards are required, leaving a passenger vehicle vulnerable to sliding underneath.
Injuries Caused by a Truck Undercarriage Accident
Serious injuries can include:
- Broken bones
- Serious lacerations
- Traumatic head injury
- Spinal damage
- Rear Guards Do Not Always Help
Although trucks manufactured after 1998 are mandated to have rear- and side-guards, the guards do not always prevent an accident, often breaking away. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, even crash speeds as low as 35 mph are capable of ripping the guards.
